Tesla launches new Model YL 6-seater SUV at ~$47,000

Tesla has officially expanded its SUV lineup with the launch of the new Model YL, a larger and more practical version of the popular Model Y. Introduced first in China, the new electric SUV brings a 6-seat layout, more interior space, and a competitive starting price of 339,000 Chinese Yuan, which converts to about $47,000 USD.

Model YL Design and Dimensions

On the outside, the Model YL doesn’t deviate much from Tesla’s familiar design language but is noticeably larger than the regular Model Y. The SUV is about 180mm longer, 24mm taller, and sits on a wheelbase stretched by 150mm. These changes translate into a roomier cabin and improved comfort, especially for second-row passengers. Tesla has also added up to 2,539 liters of storage space, making it a more family-oriented offering in the EV segment.

Model YL Seating and Features

The biggest highlight is its 6-seat configuration, featuring captain-style chairs in the second row with electric armrests for added comfort. The third row has been designed with improved legroom, thanks to the longer wheelbase. Along with the spacious cabin, the Model YL continues Tesla’s minimalist interior theme, including the large central touchscreen and premium upholstery options.

Model YL Battery and Range

Under the skin, the Model YL carries a larger battery pack compared to the standard Tesla Model Y. This helps the SUV achieve an impressive 751 km of range on the CLTC cycle (around 466 miles). While the CLTC rating tends to be more optimistic than WLTP or EPA standards, the numbers still suggest the YL will be one of the longest-range electric SUVs in its class. Performance-wise, Tesla has not confirmed additional variants yet, but the focus here is clearly on long-distance capability and family practicality.

Model YL Price and Deliveries

Priced at around $3,600 higher than the Model Y Long Range AWD in China, the Model YL sits in a reasonable spot in Tesla’s lineup. Deliveries are expected to begin in September, with China being the first market.

Competition

The Model YL faces tough competition from local electric SUVs such as the Onvo L90, which comes in at nearly $8,000 cheaper. However, Tesla’s strong brand value, charging infrastructure, and proven software ecosystem could make the YL a compelling choice for buyers looking for a premium 6-seat EV.
