Hyundai Halts Genesis Electrified GV70 EV Production in the US

Hyundai Motor has pressed pause on another one of its electric ambitions in the United States. The company has halted production of the Genesis Electrified GV70 EV at its Alabama plant, signaling a shift in focus toward more popular models like the Tucson and Santa Fe SUVs.

The Genesis Electrified GV70 EV was a milestone product when it rolled off the line in February 2023. It was Hyundai’s first electric vehicle to be manufactured in the US and came after a $300 million investment to upgrade the plant. The midsize luxury SUV featured the familiar GV70 design with subtle EV-specific touches, offering buyers a premium alternative in the growing electric SUV segment.

Genesis Electrified GV70 EV Design & Features

On the outside, the Genesis Electrified GV70 EV carried the same bold design language as its petrol counterpart, with the signature Crest Grille reinterpreted for an electric vehicle. Sleek LED headlights, a sculpted bonnet, and flowing body lines added to its premium appeal. Inside, it featured high-quality materials, a digital driver display, and a wide infotainment screen with connected car technology. Luxury features like ventilated seats, ambient lighting, and an advanced driver assistance suite made it one of the more sophisticated options in its class.

Power came from a dual-motor setup producing over 430 hp, sending power to all four wheels. This allowed the luxury SUV to sprint from 0-100 km/h in under 5 seconds, while still offering a comfortable and refined drive. On a full charge, the Genesis Electrified GV70 EV promised a driving range of up to 400 km, depending on conditions. With fast-charging support, owners could replenish 80% of the battery in just about 20 minutes.

Despite its solid credentials, sales never took off as expected. In the first seven months of this year, only 1,367 units were built in Alabama—an 18% drop compared to last year. Last month, sales fell to just 15 units, the lowest since launch.

Hyundai is now reviewing its options

The Genesis Electrified GV70 EV could be moved to its upcoming Georgia plant, where models like the IONIQ 5 and the new IONIQ 9 will be built. Another possibility is shifting production back to South Korea and exporting to the US, even if tariffs raise costs. For now, Hyundai is leaning on high-demand SUVs and hybrids like the Tucson and Santa Fe, which are proving to be more profitable.
