The race for the second spot in India’s car market is heating up. In August 2025, Hyundai Beats Tata and Mahindra to become the second-largest carmaker in terms of domestic sales. August 2025 Sales Overview

Hyundai registered domestic sales of 44,001 vehicles in August 2025, a marginal month-on-month rise of 0.06%, though this is 11.5% lower than the 49,525 units sold in August 2024. Models like the Creta, Venue, and Exter contributed significantly to Hyundai’s performance, helping the Korean brand regain the number two spot. Exports also grew impressively, with 16,500 units shipped abroad, a 20.88% year-on-year increase. From January to August 2025, Hyundai exported a total of 1,18,840 vehicles.
Tata Motors secured the third spot with 41,001 passenger vehicles sold domestically, a 7.12% decline compared to the same month last year. Tata’s electric vehicle sales stood out, with 8,540 units sold in August 2025, marking a strong 43.89% year-on-year growth. Exports also surged, with 2,314 vehicles shipped overseas, a jump of over 570% from August 2024.
Mahindra, primarily strong in the utility vehicle segment, sold 39,399 vehicles domestically in August 2025, down 9% from 43,277 units in August 2024. Including exports, total sales stood at 40,846 units. Year-to-date (April–August 2025), Mahindra sold 2,41,337 utility vehicles domestically, showing a healthy 15% year-on-year growth.
