India EV Sales Hit Record High in August 2025 – Tata Leads, Mahindra & MG Surge

India’s electric vehicle (EV) market recorded its best-ever monthly performance in August 2025, with retail India EV Sales reaching 17,298 units, as per Vahan data. This marks an impressive 155 percent year-on-year (YoY) growth compared to August 2024’s 6,787 units. Even on a month-on-month basis, sales were up by 7.46 percent over July 2025.

The market currently comprises 14 carmakers, and interestingly, only four brands reported a YoY decline. Tata Motors continued its dominance, while Mahindra and MG posted strong gains. Hyundai, Kia, and BYD also recorded notable growth.

Tata Motors Maintains Leadership

Tata Motors sold 7,088 EVs in August, a 13 percent rise over July 2025 and 61 percent higher YoY. The lineup, which includes the Punch EV, Nexon EV, Curvv EV, and the recently launched Harrier EV, helped Tata maintain the top spot with a 41 percent market share. However, this is lower than the 65 percent share it held last year, indicating growing competition.

MG and Mahindra See Strong Gains

MG Motor India registered 4,759 units, up a massive 231 percent YoY, driven by models like the ZS EV, Comet EV, and new premium offerings such as the M9 MPV and Cyberster roadster. Despite this, MG saw a 10 percent dip compared to July.

Mahindra followed closely with 3,495 units, marking a staggering 937 percent YoY growth. The company’s EV portfolio, including the BE 6, XEV 9e, and XUV400, continues to attract buyers, especially in the SUV segment.

Other Key Performers

Hyundai delivered 584 EVs, mainly driven by the Creta EV and Ioniq 5, while Kia clocked its best-ever monthly EV sales at 441 units, thanks to the Carens Clavis EV. BYD sold 447 units, maintaining its niche in the premium EV market.

Luxury India EV Sales Segment on the Rise

Luxury carmakers contributed 464 units, up 170 percent YoY. BMW led the space with 362 units, followed by Mercedes-Benz with 68 units.

With EV sales up 71 percent in 2025 compared to the same period last year, the segment is showing clear signs of rapid adoption. More new models and competitive pricing are expected to push these numbers even higher in the coming months.
