Mahindra Thar Sports to Debut on August 15 with New Design and Features

Mahindra & Mahindra is gearing up to reveal its all-new Mahindra Thar Sports compact SUV on August 15, 2025, alongside four other concept models and its new front-wheel-drive NU platform. While earlier reports hinted at the SUV being the next-generation Bolero, fresh details suggest that Mahindra is positioning it as a sportier, globally focused version of the Thar. Interestingly, in Australia, it will be sold under a different name due to trademark considerations.

Mahindra Thar Sports Design and Styling

The Thar Sports will move away from the traditional ladder-frame construction seen on the current Thar 3-door and Thar Roxx, adopting a modern monocoque platform for improved on-road comfort, refinement, and safety. Design-wise, it takes inspiration from the Thar-e electric concept showcased in 2023, retaining the rugged and boxy proportions Mahindra is known for.

Up front, it gets a distinctive grille with the new Mahindra logo, a muscular bumper with integrated fog lamps, and classic circular headlamps reminiscent of the Thar Roxx. The profile reveals flush-fitting door handles, squarish wheel arches, functional roof rails, and a side-hinged rear door with a tailgate-mounted spare wheel. At the rear, vertically stacked tail-lamps add to its upright stance.

Inside, the SUV is expected to get a large touchscreen infotainment system supporting Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a digital driver’s display, automatic climate control, and a height-adjustable driver’s seat. Premium touches like a panoramic sunroof will also be available. On the safety front, it will feature six airbags, ESP with traction control, hill launch assist, and hill descent control. Mahindra is also likely to offer Level 2 ADAS, bringing features like adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, and lane keep assist.

The Thar Sports is likely to offer multiple powertrain options. The petrol range could include a 1.2-litre, three-cylinder turbocharged engine producing 109hp and 230Nm, while a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder turbo diesel delivering 115hp and 300Nm is expected for the India market. Both 6-speed manual and 6-speed torque converter automatic gearboxes should be available. A hybrid variant based on the 1.2-litre turbo petrol is also on the cards, aimed at improving fuel efficiency.

Mahindra Thar Sports Expected Price

While Mahindra has not revealed prices yet, the Thar Sports is expected to start around ₹12 lakh (ex-showroom) in India, placing it in competition with models like the Maruti Jimny and upcoming compact lifestyle SUVs.

With its mix of rugged styling, modern features, and versatile powertrains, the Mahindra Thar Sports could appeal to both urban buyers and adventure enthusiasts when it launches later this year.
