Maruti’s first electric model for India, the e Vitara, will debut later this fiscal year. It will be based on Suzuki’s e-HEARTECT platform, which also underpins Toyota’s upcoming EV. Two battery options will be on offer – a 48.9kWh unit and a larger 61.1kWh pack, the latter capable of delivering around 500km range on a single charge. Fast charging will be supported, with the bigger battery charging from 0-80% in about 50 minutes.

Ahead of the launch, Maruti plans to install charging stations across 100 cities to address range anxiety, which it sees as a major barrier to EV adoption in India.

Hybrids will play a major role in Maruti Suzuki’s future plans. On September 3, 2025, the company will introduce a new midsize SUV, likely called the Escudo, with petrol, CNG and hybrid powertrains. The hybrid variant will use Toyota’s 1.5-litre TNGA engine, offering an ARAI-rated fuel efficiency of around 28km/l.

In addition, Maruti is developing an in-house series hybrid system. The upcoming Fronx hybrid will be the first to get it, pairing a 1.2-litre Z Series petrol engine with an electric motor and a compact battery. Here, the petrol engine will act as a generator, supplying energy to the battery rather than directly driving the wheels. This setup will later feature in models like the Swift, next-gen Baleno, Spacia-based MPV, and the next-gen Brezza.

Maruti already leads India’s CNG market with around 70% share and aims to expand it further. All upcoming models, including the Escudo, will have a CNG option. Interestingly, the Escudo could debut an underbody CNG tank to free up boot space.

The company is also working on a new entry-level car with mild-hybrid, CNG, and flex-fuel options. This will target first-time car buyers in the ₹5–13 lakh annual income bracket, further strengthening Maruti’s presence in the affordable segment.

By balancing EVs, hybrids, and fuel-efficient ICE models, Maruti Suzuki is positioning itself to cater to a wide range of Indian customers while preparing for the industry’s gradual shift towards cleaner mobility.
